Continuing Medical Education

As you know, physicians are required by state law to obtain Category 1 or Category 2 Continuing Medical Education credits in patient safety and risk management in order to maintain a Pennsylvania medical license.

For every two-year licensure period doctors of medicine and osteopathy must document twelve Category 1 or Category 2 Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits in patient safety and risk management in order to maintain a Pennsylvania license. (This requirement is fully described in the state regulations.)

According to the AMA's Physician Recognition Award Information booklet, Category 2 credit may be earned for activities physicians have undertaken on their own which should be beneficial to their practice. Credit claimed should be commensurate with the actual time spent on an activity. These activities include: consultations with peers and experts; medical research and study online; using non-designated enduring materials; teaching other health professionals; and, reading authoritative medical literature.

By registering below, you will receive a Patient Safety Advisory each quarter by email, which a physician may self-designate as category 2 credit. These advisories are produced by Pennsylvania's Patient Safety Authority (PSA) and are being provided to you by 3PSC in cooperation with the PSA. The PSA is an independent state agency established by Act 13 of 2002.
