3PSC, PNS and POS Band Together in Call for Stable Medical Liability Premiums

June 29, 2007

Three statewide specialty physician organizations came together to request the Governor maintain the current medical liability coverage levels in order to stabilize premiums for 2008.

Pennsylvania Neurosurgical Society President Raymond C. Truex, Jr., MD, Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Society President Charles D. Hummer, III, MD and Pennsylvania Physicians for the Protection of Specialty Care (3PSC) President Barbara G. Frieman, MD wrote Governor Rendell with the request in an effort to avoid another New Year's Eve crisis of high-risk specialty surgeons unable to afford their medical liability insurance premiums due Jan. 1.

The three organizations also issued a press release citing the Rendell Administration's estimates that medical liability insurance premiums would increase by 20% with an increase in the amount of coverage the private commercial insurers are required to provide. Currently private carriers cover the first $500,000 in medical liability insurance coverage with the Mcare Fund covering the remaining $500,000. As per Act 13 of 2002, the Department of Insurance is encouraged to shift the levels to require the private market to cover $750,000 and the Mcare Fund the remaining $250,000.
