Specialty Surgeons Thank Gov. Rendell
For Stabilizing Medical Liability Premiums
Pennsylvania Physicians for the Protection of Specialty Care (3PSC), the Pennsylvania Neurosurgical Society (PNS) and the Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Society (POS) sent a video Thank You to Governor Ed Rendell for his Administration's recognition that an increase in the amount of medical liability insurance coverage physicians would be required to purchase in the private market would have significantly threatened the state's liability insurance market.
3PSC, PNS and POS worked together to advocate for a delay in the scheduled changes to the medical liability coverage levels in order to avoid another medical liability crisis at the end of this year.
The Rendell Administration decision saved physicians from a 20% increase in their premiums beginning Jan. 1, 2008. Such an increase would result in many surgeons unable to afford the insurance they are required to carry in order to perform surgery and other medical services.
The three organizations will continue their efforts to advocate for affordable medical liability insurance for specialty surgeons this fall when they push for a continuation of the state's Mcare Abatement Program. The program, which provides significant reductions in specialty surgeons medical liability insurance costs, is set to expire December 31.
